Robert Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer was a German Jew that had previously fled from the Nazi party. For many years, the Germans and Americans were in a race to complete the bombfirst. It was considered a spectacular success when on July 16, 1945 in the New Mexico desert, thefirst atomic bomb was detonated in a test run. Second, he wanted to justify the effort and expense of even building and having possession of the atomic bombs. Truman also wanted to offer hope of achieving diplomatic gains in the growing rivalry with the Soviet Union Additionally, he knew the United States had much hatred towards the Japanese and most everyone wanted vengeance against them after what happened at Pearl Harbor, where the Japaneseexecuted a surprise attack on the United States military base.
