The rise of the Union progress commenced after the Civil War, which brought awareness for the justice of worker rights in their work environments. To this day, unions continue to fight for safety protections, administer great health insurance for their workers, and constitute good pension coverage. Labor unions are essential as much today as they ever were. These organizations have cultivated a significant impact on the work lives of not only unionized working families but also non-unionized families. Unions generate a prominent role in the representation of labor laws and regulations covering areas such as overtime pay, minimum wage, health and retirement coverage, the treatment of immigrant workers, civil rights, and workers compensation. My mother has been a devoted member of the APWU union for 21 years, my father has been a part of the UFCW for 24 years, and both are influential role models for both me and my sister.

Throughout my life, I have looked up to my parents for their hard work, determination, responsibility, and strength; I believe all these characteristics are omitted in each union member not only in the United States but around the world. At a young age they has taught me the importance of hardwork and perseverance.  It was not until I commenced working that I became truly aware of the urgency of rights each worker should be provided. Both of my parents joined the union at the commencement of their jobs and have continued to stay in the union and be a motivating example of what the union represents. As Americans and others around the world have observed, robust labor movements are essential to a prosperous democracy which can be supported by the following quote declared by John F. Kennedy.
