“The fundamental purpose of scientific discourse is not the mere presentation of information and thought but rather its actual communication. It does not matter how pleased an author might be to have converted all right data into sentences and paragraphs;it matters only whether a large majority of the reading audience accurately perceives what author had in mind.”-George Gopen and Judith swan.Technical writing/communication is mostly used where the scientific information is to be given to the audience. Whereas general piece writing is used by authors to express emotions. In technical writing, giving details in a way that can be understood by audience is more important than just writing all the data into paragraphs. Writing research papers or a lab report is a technical writing whereas writing fictions, poetry, etc is general piece of writing.General writing is more about gaining the interests and attention of audience whereas technical writing is about explaining the topic to audience in simpler way as possible.Technical writing requires planning before you start expressing your ideas/data in words. Words used need to be precise about what you want to deliver. Using simplicity is one of the feature of technical writing. You would not want to give exact big numerical data about your experiment which people find difficult to understand and remember whereas just giving necessary details and approximating actual data is a good practice. To make writing simple, active voice is used.Active voice is straightforward to the details.Example, rather than writing “the feedthrough was composed of a sapphire optical fiber, which was pressed against the pyrotechnic that was used to confine the charge” we can write “The feedthrougth contained a sapphire optical fiber, which pressed against the pyrotechnic that contained the charge” which is more easier to understand. Also reducing the words used also helps to understand the writing easier like in the above example instead of “which was pressed against” we used “which pressed against”. The information which is most important is to be given first in technical writing that means we need to use words in order. Along this, it is also necessary to give specific details about the term you use while mentioning it for first time. Example, writing jut ” let say ‘x’ amount of radiation was found ” would be more specific to write also why this ‘x’ amount of radiation is dangerous or that giving the scale of radiation which is dangerous.Coherence: this is one of the most important aspect of a technical writing, If we don’t write information in which it relates to the other information previously given or that is to be given, audience won’t be able to interpret it in a meaningful way.To them it would just remain a raw data presented on a paper rather than information about some serious topic/issue.Combine overlap sentences whenever possible to reduce the size. Example,”Water quality in Hawk River declined in March. This decline occurred because of the heavy rainfall that month. All the extra water overloaded Tomlin county’s water treatment plant.”” Water quality in Hawk River declined in March because heavy rainfalls overloaded Tomlin County water treatment plant.”Avoid jargon: Don’t use abbreviations and slangs which the audience won’t understand.
