It can determine where a people live, the friends they make, and the amount of money a people earns. A career can also determine how a person feels about himself and how others act towards them. A career can vary greatly in the type of work involved and how it influences a person’s life.A job is where people go to make money but they are not proud of working at that job unlike if they had a career they would be proud of working. A Correctional Officer’s career carries these traits and requires much more talent from a person than a day–to-day job could ever fulfill. The people tend to go to great lengths to feel powerful and not find their talents to succeed.A career as a Correctional Officer can affect a person’s life in many ways. It’s dependent on a person’s dignity and characterizes how that people would be described in society. It expands their knowledge and develops hidden talents that a person otherwise would not know existed. Their strength and their weakness are visible and through training become their greatest talent.

A career as a Correctional Officer not only changes the officer’s outlook on himself but also how to maintain authority he has over the inmates. Most common people in the same position would more than likely abuse the power they hold over the inmates and yet the talented person with this position creates a comfortable line between the two. ( Courtright) The physical demand that a Correctional Officer faces are harsh and drains them mentally and physically. They’re paid knowing at any minute they could get a disease, be stabbed, or never see your family again because of their line of work. They are harassed by the inmates at all times and bodily fluids are thrown at them. They are required to maintain calmness in order to handle the emotions and to think fast and act swiftly in a crisis. They are responsible for watching every detail an inmate makes. The talented career oriented Correctional Officer will obey by the rules given to them without question or haste.

The less talented job oriented Correctional Officer will maintain the rules as they are being watched but will always bend them to seek revenge or prove the power is to their favor. The job oriented workers will always degrade the inmate or find sneaky ways of getting even for any out-of-line events that take place on their shift. Courtright) A Correctional Officer maintains the prison rules, enforces facility regulations, and ensures a safe atmosphere within the prison walls. They make sure that the prisoners stay within the compound of the walls away from society. There is an underlying assumption that Correctional Officers are overpaid and do nothing to earn that pay. People that voice this opinion would never walk into a prison and work and the same people may sometimes hold this job and never continue to further their career. (Turner)People that have this career require the strength to hold every negative thought that this job brings to them. They need confidence in themselves to walk into a building that houses criminals.

As they use their experiences and training to watch over prisoners they learn not to trust people in general. This is one of the hardest weaknesses that the career oriented officer and the job oriented officer both share. It is discouraging that because both individuals are surrounded with such evil every day that they begin to doubt goodness in everyone. The difference between the two are although they hold the same position, deal with the same people, and are paid the same money; the career oriented officer will succeed and promote in their field whereas, the job oriented officer will always find negativity and remain the same his whole working life.

( Courtright) Choosing a career in this field is difficult to determine until the training and talent have prevailed. Many that chose this path realize their own potential and before the position has begun it has been determined if it becomes a career or just a job.Sadly, they are not the only ones affected by this outcome their family suffers too.
