The coming of age novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky, follows the self-discovery of an introverted 15-year-old boy named Charlie. The novel is written in a series of letters to an anonymous person, which he sends, as he needs someone to talk to after his best friend’s suicide. Each letter explains the many experiences of his freshman year of high school as they happen, such as the universal “teen firsts” such as his first date, kiss, girlfriend, school dance and break up. Through making new friendships, Charlie, particularly with Patrick and Sam discovers a new way of seeing the world and his role within it.

At the same time, Charlie is plagued by the many discoveries of family secrets, such as his sister’s abusive boyfriend and his own molestation by his aunt, which threaten his psychological and physical wellbeing.
