The Case Studies of Burns
A child was sent to the ER to be treated. The child had an incident of spilling hot boiling water on her chest that burned her skin really badly, the burns on her chest were gun vs. skin gafs. This treatment had helped with the burns and cleared the child skin.
There are three major layers that make up healthy skin. They are called Epidermis, Dermis, and Hypodermis. Epidermis is the outer layer of the skin. Epidermis has a barrier and its main function is to protect the skin and cells. Epidermis is waterproof, this is the reason why when we shower are skin doesn’t swell into liquid. In Epidermis cells are able to make new cells over and over again once they die. There are some important layers in Epidermis. One them is Stratum Basale, this layer is rested on the basement membrane, located all the way in the bottom. Its function is that stem cells divide and give keratinocytes (protein) that move toward the skin surface to replace epidermal cells. Stratum Spinosum is multiple layers of keratinocytes, this is the thicker body parts of the skin. In Stratum Spinosum it includes Desmosomes, which holds the skin up together tightly to help the epidermis. Stratum Corneum is also a layer that helps Epidermis. It is basically, dead cells that form a layer. Dermis is the other layer in having a healthy skin. Dermis is made of papillary which is the upper part of the layer, and the thicker part of the lower layer is the reticular. Dermis is a connective tissue its right beneath the Epidermis. It involves blood vessels, oil, sweat glands, nerves and hair follicles. The final layer is called Hypodermis, it also known as the Subcutaneous tissue. Its has larger blood vessels and nerves than the other layers Its made of connective tissue and a lot of fat. It’s the fattest part of the layer. Which is used as a thermal insulator to keep our bodies warm and regulates our temperature. A fun fact about the Hypodermis is that women have more of this layer than men do and as you start to age you start to lose this layer in your body. Having healthy skin is very important in our everyday lives. In an article it stated that, Skin supports the life of all body parts and plays a role in maintaining the immune system (” American Skin,”2012).
The same way there were three layers of skin there are also, three different type degrees burns. In an article it references that ” Burns are one of the most common household injuries, especially among children. The term “burn” means more than the burning sensation associated with this injury. Burns are characterized by severe skin damage that causes the affected skin cells to die ( “Khan & Solan, 2016). The first degree burn. This burn only damages the epidermis. Causing the burn to turn red and maybe swell up. It can be painful but its a minor burn. This burn is different than the other burns because its able to heal faster such as in several days. The other burn is second degree burn this burn is different than first degree burn because it’s more painful and when the skin its burn blisters start to swell up. Not only that but it affects the epidermis and the dermis skin layer as well. The healing process may take up to three weeks to heal and the burn looks wet and moist unlike in first degree burn because they are mostly dry and a scab may begin. The last burn is the third degree burn. This burn is completely out of rage than the other degrees burn because the burn completely destroys all the layers of skin and deeper tissues. After the skin is completely damages it looks like white, blackened charred. Also this degree is different than the others because the process of healing is much longer and having being burned in this degree can caused a person to die. Here are some examples of the degrees burn in order.
In the first degree burn you can see how the body is completely red and swollen Second Degree Burn
In the second degree burn you can see how the blisters are forming on her arm and it arm looks wet and moist.
Third Degree Burn
In the third degree burn picture you can see how it looks worse than the other burns, black and damaged.
An estimated guess on how much body percentage the child body was burn by looking at the picture would be twenty percent. The torso of the child was burn in first and second degree. I believe the percentage would be more if the child other body parts were burn as well.
Since the child did not have third degree burns, the physician used the skin cell gun. The skin cell gun is a device that sprays a person’s own stem cells to treat burns and other wounds, ( (“Skin Cell Gun.” 2017). This information was from an article on date about the gun cell. The skin is an very important part of your body and once burned must get treated quickly. The skin cell gun is very useful and helpful because its able to heal the skin burns in a week. The physicians isolating the healthy cells from the skin and putting all the cells together then spraying the healthy cells to the second degree burns. Doctors need to add water solution with the patient stem cells. The fact that the stem cells speedly recover is useful, since so many patients could end up dying from waiting for the burns to recover from catching an infection.
