Sun is a natural nuclear reactor, it releases small packets of energy which are called photons, which
travel at the speed of 93 million miles in about eight and half minutes from sun to earth. It is stated that about every hour, enough
photons collide our planet to generate enough solar energy which can ideally satisfy global energy need for an entire year.  Solar energy is worked by capturing sunlight in order
to generate electricity for houses and for business purposes. Currently
photovoltaic power accounts for only about five percent to tenths of one
percent of the energy is used up in the United States. Electricity is generated very easily by capturing sunlight and if the
conductors are attached to the positive and negative sides of a cell, it forms
an electric circuit and when the electrons flow through the circuit it generates electricity which is then used for homes and
business purposes. Moreover, numerous cells make up one solar panel and more
the panels, more the energy generation. Photovoltaic solar panels generate direct current (DC) electricity, which means that the flow of
electrons is in one direction around a circuit. Whereas in alternating current (AC) electricity, electrons
move from negative terminal to positive terminal and from half way turn around
and move from positive terminal to negative terminal, the flow of electrons in
a circuit produce current. Alternating current electricity is generated when a coil of a wire hit the spun next to
the magnet, to hit the spun there need to something which have to turn the
handle of the generator, which can be done in several ways such as gas, diesel,
hydroelectricity, coal, wind or by solar. In houses and buildings alternating current is used since it is easy and cheap to
transmit over long distances. However, as earlier in the essay it is stated
that solar power generates direct current electricity but alternating current electricity
is used in homes and buildings. To convert direct current electricity to
alternating current electricity a solar inverter is used which takes the direct current electricity
from solar array and uses that to create alternating current electricity. To avoid problems in generating electricity by solar
energy the introduction of micro-inverter is one of the biggest technology shifts in the
photovoltaic industry. The main function of micro-inverter is to be used for each individual solar panel instead of functioning the entire solar
system, as central inverts do. This enable every solar panel to perform at its extreme potential. Whereas, when a central invert is used, having
problem in one of the solar panel can reduce the functioning of the entire
solar array. Micro-inverter solves this problem by optimizing for each single
one of the solar panel. In short and simple words, the sunlight hit the solar
panel which traps that energy and convert that energy into DC electricity which
is then converted to AC electricity by using inverter and then that AC
electricity can be used in homes and for business purposes. On the other side if we look at the history of solar energy then by
doing some research found that the idea of solar energy came way back in 1800 by William Grylls Adams
along with one of his student Richard Day discovered that when selenium is
exposed to light, it produces electricity.  Few years later one of the
scientist stated that the discovery was not corrected because the selenium
cells were not efficient but it was proven that light without the heat or
moving particles could be converted into electricity. Further in 1953, Calvin
Fuller, Gerald Pearson and Chapin Daryl discovered the silicon solar cells which
could produce enough electricity to run small electrical devices. Solar technology is improving and the cost of solar
panels are dropping at rapid speed for the customers to buy. By the year 1956 the first solar cells were available commercially for
customers to buy but at that era price for buying one solar power was beyond
the reach of a median class individual, later in the same year first solar
cells was used in toys and radio and stated that these items were the first
item to have solar cells available for consumers. Moreover, the use of solar energy was expanded further
in early 1960’s when satellites in the USA’s and Soviet’s space program were
power by solar cells. As the use of the solar energy been increasing the price
for the consumption of the energy were also reduced to $80 per watt from $100 per watt. From 1970’s to onward there has been increase in the demand on solar panels. Solar panels are beneficial in many ways such as generating your own
electricity, if excessive electricity is generated then the rest energy is
stored back in the grids which can be used after wards at night time or on a
sunny day which also save the consumer a lot of money on an electricity bill
since they are generating their own electricity. There are some advantages and disadvantages of solar energy. Advantages include renewable
energy source, reduce electricity bills, diverse applications, low maintenance cost, technology development, eco-friendly, can
increase the value of the house whereas, on the other hand the disadvantages
include expensive to install, dependent on weather, energy storage is expensive, uses a lot of place, cannot generate electricity
24 hours a day since it requires sunlight to generate electricity, associated with pollution and lastly complication when moving to a new place.

As in today’s world we
humans are facing a lot of problems regarding air pollution and global warming.

Global warming is one of the most important issue going on in today’s world.

Studies shows that over 30% of the carbon dioxide is produced by burning of
fossil fuels in order to generate electricity. In most countries electricity is
generated by burning of carbon, which then releases carbon monoxide in the air
which is very harmful for human beings and in order to save earth from
depleting we humans need to control on the production of carbon monoxide and
other harmful gases which can deplete the ozone layer. Solar power helps to
reduce the global warming, decades of research have led to solar panel system
to generate electricity without producing any in toxic pollutants in the
environment.  However, to overcome these
problems people need to generate their own electricity by installing solar
panels on the roof of their houses. In order to provide solar panels to consumer’s,
prices need to be dropped down to a level where it is possible for a moderate
person to buy one or more solar panel to generate electricity. Installing solar
panels on the roof of the house or building can save the owner or occupants
thousands of dollars. Research indicates that for average 20- years savings for
an American who went solar in 2011 will save the person about $20,000. Solar
power is completely reliable on the sun, the only thing which can interrupt in
generating electricity is the clouds but overall the amount of sunlight in a
day which is trapped by solar panel can save enough electricity in the storage
which can used later at night time when sunlight is not around anymore. In Canada
we also have fairly good seasonal and daily predictions for the amount of
sunlight that will be received in different location. Other than this solar
power also provide energy security since no one can go and buy the sun or turn
sunlight into a price tag.
