Sleep deprivation occurs when an individual gets less sleep than they need to feel awake and alert. People vary in how little sleep is needed to be considered sleep-deprived. Some people such as older adults seem to be more resistant to the effects of sleep deprivation, while others, especially children and young adults, are more vulnerable. Lack of sleep can lead to excessive daytime sleepiness, emotional difficulties, poor job performance, obesity and a lowered perception of quality of life. (Medical News Today Knowledge Center)
It alters normal functioning of attention and disrupts the ability to focus on environmental sensory input. It has been implicated as playing a significant role in tragic accidents. Lack of sleep can also be symptom of some sleep disorder that are not yet diagnosed or other medical problem.
Sleep deprivation is a very common problem in the world. According to Sleep Cycle, no country in the world manages to achieve 8 hours of sleep on a regular basis. Japan is one of the countries that are experiencing lack of sleep. According to the data, the national average of sleep in Japan is only 5 hours and 59 minutes. Saudi Arabia came second which only have 6 hours and 8 minutes of sleep, Sweden on the third spot which have 6 hours and 10 minutes of sleep followed by India with 6 hours and 20 minutes of sleep and lastly the Philippines which have 6 hours and 22 minutes of sleep.
According to the 2016 Healthy Living Index Survey, Philippines has one of the highest rates of sleep deprivation in Asia. 46 percent out of 100 Filipinos said that they do not get enough sleep and 32 percent says that they sleep for less than six hours. Surveys says that more than eight in 10 adults or 84 percent says that a variety of activities take precedence over a good night’s sleep. Many Filipinos are choosing to sleep less due to the geometric rise of Internet usage in the country. They tend to have more time surfing the web than taking a sleep.
Sleep deprivation can cause damage to the body in the short term and may lead to chronic health problems and negatively impact one’s quality of life.
Not getting enough sleep prevents the body from strengthening the immune system and producing more cytokines to fight infection. This can mean a person can take longer to recover from illness as well as having an increased risk of chronic illness. Sleep deprivation can also result in an increased risk of new and advanced respiratory diseases.
A lack of sleep can affect body weight. Two hormones in the body, leptin and ghrelin, control feelings of hunger and satiety, or fullness. The levels of these hormones are affected by sleep. Sleep deprivation also causes the release of insulin, which leads to increased fat storage and a higher risk of type 2 diabetes. Sleep helps the heart vessels to heal and rebuild as well as affecting processes that maintain blood pressure and sugar levels as well as inflammation control. Not sleeping enough increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Insufficient sleep can affect hormone production, including growth hormones and testosterone in men. Statement of the Problem
This study aims to determine the effects of sleep loss to the academic performance of the senior high achievers.
Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions:
1. How many hours of sleep do the students need to keep their academic performance unaffected?
2. What are the usual reasons why the students sleep late?
3. What are the advantages to the academic if the students sleep early?
Significance of the Study
This study is highly significant to the academic performance of the senior high school achievers of St. Louise de Marillac College of Bogo.
Moreover, this project can be beneficial to the following:

Students: this study allows students to be aware of their sleep loss problem. It will help students to gain deeper understanding about the problem.
Teachers: Teachers will be able to think about sleep deprivation as a factor affecting students’ learning and be more considerate concerning students’ differences in performance and behavior.
Future Researchers: Researchers will have an easier time understanding the students. It will also help them in the future study related to such topic.

Scope and Delimitations
This study focuses on the effects of academic performance of the Senior High School achievers due to their duration of sleep. Thus, the study will be conducted at St. Louise de Marillac College of Bogo College Department located at Sor. D. Rubio St., Bogo City, Cebu. The selections of the respondents will only be limited to the Senior High school achievers in every classrooms.
