Oh Goddess Saraswati, fair as flower of jasmine or moon or a snow flake,Whose hands are adorned by Vina who is seated in a white lotus, in white dress,Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar always pray and worship whom,Please protect us, from all the evils. Shree Panchami, (Saraswati or Basanta Panchami) Pooja is one of the most important festivals in Nepal. Basanta Panchami is the day cultural and the day to inaugurate the spring festivals. The day falls on the tittle day of the waxing, moon of Magha. According to the English calendar it fails in between the last week of January and first fortnight of February. This festival marks the workshop of Goddess Saraswati. Saraswati is the Goddess of learning, music, art and literature.Most of the seasons in the year are not as hostile as winter in the Himalayas and hills. During these months of December and January, the cold waves and snowfall of winter suck all the energy and vitality of the people. Most of the educational institutions remain closed and the streets have a deserted look. People seem to have forgotten the festival of life. However, by the end of January the winter comes to an end and the sun blares, flowers blossom and faces of people glow The arrival of spring inaugurates the festivity of a new life.Seated on lotus, the four-handed goddess Saraswati is the form of purity, religiosity and sanctity. She is always found with book and the Vina. She is worshiped to seek knowledge virtue and wisdom. Shree Panchami is also known as Basant Panchami in Kathmandu, it is celebrated in a traditional manner. His Majesty, the King of Nepal arrives at Hanuman Dhaka Durbar square. The traditional songs of spring are sung to welcome the Spring on this occasion. However, the festival of Basant Pancharni is celebrated in different way in Terai of Nepal, which greatly influenced by the activities of people living across the border in India. The festival is celebrated with much enthusiasm by people educational enterprises viz. Students teachers etc. Since Saraswati is the Goddess of learning, there is a great respect for this festival among, students as they are impious of formal education.
Hence, the Shree Panchami festival is celebrated in different ways by the people of different communities. On this solemn occasion, small children initiate their first alphabet. The Shree Panchami day is also considered auspicious for marriage ceremony. In this way, Shree Panchami is vital process in Nepalese community and important for all of us.
