Osteoporosis in diet are at the highest risk

Osteoporosis (OP)is a silently progressing metabolic bone disease.

It is estimated to affect 200million women worldwide – approximately one-tenth of women aged 60, one-fifthof women aged 70, two-fifths of women aged 80 and two-thirds of women aged 90 1.It is widely prevalent in Indian population as well 2. OP leads to loss ofbone mass resulting in fractures after minor trauma, especially of spinal vertebrae, the bones of the forearmand hip. Globally, more than 8.9 million fractures every year occurs secondaryto OP 3 and a considerable cause of morbidity and mortality 4.  Studies have shownthat post menopausal women with a positive family history, and who have lowintake of calcium and Vitamin D in diet are at the highest risk 5.

There isexaggerated bone loss as compared to new bone formation in OP. Therefore, measuresmost commonly applied for OP management are- regular weight bearing exercises, oralcalcium and Vitamin D (Cholecalciferol) supplementation and drugs that decreaseosteoclastic bone resorption like bisphosphonates (risedronate, alendronate), SelectiveEstrogen Receptor Modulators (Raloxifene) and Calcitonin 6. Teriperatide, acongener of parathyroid hormone has been recently introduced for OP treatmentand it has been shown to increase new bone formation 7. However, much less isknown about the effectiveness of Teriperatide considering its high cost in the Indianpopulation.

Despiteavailability of various treatments for OP it has a profound negative impact onthe Quality of Life (QoL) as pointed out by numerous studies 8. Fractureshave a negative impact on self-esteem, body image, and mood, which may lead topsychological consequences. Thus, the psychosocial suffering of the patient mustalso be evaluated. Furthermore, there is a paucity of Indian studies in thisfield.

Hence the QoL evaluation of post menopausal patients suffering from OP becomesimperative.
