On our trip to the St. Louis Art Museum we were taken on a tour to see some artwork. While there we saw many different types and styles of art and were given information about them and the meanings.
After the tour we were given an assignment to write about the different elements and principles of art. The three properties of color are hue, value, and intensity. Hue is the color in its purest intensity, basically it doesn’t have any other color added into it while value is its variations of the color. Color schemes are used everywhere for things such as interior decorating. Some color schemes are analogous colors, which are next to each other on the color wheel, such as blue and purple. Another scheme is complementary colors, which are colors opposite to each other on the color wheel, the three complementary colors are blue and orange, purple and yellow, and red and green. A example of use of color is Spectrum by Ellsworth Kelly.
A example of form is a statute such as Little Dancer of Fourteen Years by Edgar Degas. Three dimensional form has height, width, and depth. A term sculptors use in negative space, which means the space around a statue or a hole. Texture can bring out an area to grab attention when used with form.Texture, something used commonly in paintings, is used to make a border, give interest, or call attention to an area .
Texture can be felt or implied, it looks like it could be felt. It can give the appearance the art is smooth, rough, bumpy, velvety and more. Texture is often mistaken for pattern. An example of an artist using texture is Water Lilies by Monet.Contrast is used to refer to differences that separate one form from another. There can be contrasts in hue or changes in value. There are contrasts such as shapes or colors.
Contrasts are often opposites such as thick and thin, dark and light, and wavy and straight. An example of contrast in art is Allure by Jerald Jeans Unity is how elements of art are used to produce an unified end art piece. As artists work they use unity to create harmony in their art. Symmetry, equally balanced elements, and asymmetry, unequally balanced elements, are used in unity. Unity is thinking of the entire piece and its end result. A good example of unity is Starry Night By Vincent van Gogh.
In the end I learned color has three properties hue, intensity and value. I learned form is found in sculptures. That texture can be felt or implied.
Contrasts of art refer to its differences. Lastly I learned unity includes both symmetry and asymmetry.
