“Never Let Me Go” by Kazuo Ishiguro is a dystopian science-fiction novel; located in England, that features organ donors whose lives end after their fourth donation.
In the very first line of chapter one the the narrator introduces herself as Kathy H. , a 31 year old who works as a “carer”. Kathy has worked as a carer for 12 years, she likes her job, however she says she will be retiring very soon.
Kathy has gained several privileges and cares for patients that she grew up with at Hailsham.
Throughout the first and second chapter she is constantly re-living old memories she had with Ruth and Tommy.
The first flashback occurs as Kathy is driving past a sports pavilion that reminds her of the Hailsham pavilion. During these flashbacks we meet Ruth and Tommy.
Ruth was Kathy´s friend at Hailsham, and is now a donor. Kathy is Ruth´s carer and lives with her at the Cottages. When they were younger Ruth used to be the bossy, outspoken type; the leader.
Another character we meet is Tommy. He was the bullied kid due to his lack of creative abilities and short temper. He would throw tantrums and cry a lot, this had Kathy feeling sorry for him, and made it her responsibility to help him out.
