Mexico is a country between the US and Central America. It has a very diverse landscape of mountains, deserts, and jungles. Mexico covers 1,972,550 square kilometers. This includes 6,000 kilometers of islands in the Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of California. Mexico also has a 9,330 kilometer coastline. Mexico had a population of 127.5 million in 2016.
The president of Mexico is Enrique Pena Nieto. He took office on December 1, 2012. Enrique was born on July 20, 1966. EPN is the 57th president of Mexico. He was educated as a lawyer and previously served in the State of Mexico as Secretary of Administration. During his presidency he has faced two major controversies. The escape of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman and accusations that he plagiarized his law school thesis. When he began his term he had a 50% approval rating, but with the sluggish economy growth it fell to 35% by 2015.
The culture of Mexico reflects the country’s complex history. Religion is a big part of Mexico’s culture. In 2010 95.6% of Mexico’s population were Christian. Arts are a big influence too. Embroidered cotton garments, cotton or wool shawls and outer garments, and colorful baskets and rugs can be seen everywhere. After the Mexican Revolution a new wave of Mexican artists led a vibrant national movement. Modern Mexican literature is heavily influenced by the concepts of the Spanish colonization of Mesoamerica.
Mesoamerican architecture in Mexico is best known for its public, ceremonial, and urban monumental buildings and structures. Several of these structures are the largest in the world. The architecture is divided into three eras, preclassic, classic, and post-classic. The Academy of San Carlos was founded in 1788. The academy was the first major art academy in the Americas. They promoted neoclassicism, focusing on Greek and Roman art and architecture.
Mexican cuisine began about 9,000 years ago. The establishment of the Aztec Empire created a multi ethnic society where many different food ways became infused. After the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire in the 16th century, Europeans began to introduce a number of their foods as well. The most important food that they introduced were meats from domesticated animals. African and Asian influences are also involved. Vegetables play a very important role in Mexican cuisine. The staples are corn, beans, squash, amaranth, chia, avocados, tomatoes, tomatillos, cacao, vanilla, agave, turkey, sweet potatoes, cactus, and chili pepper. Mexican cuisine is elaborate and often tied with festivals and symbolism.
