Mechanical engineer design power-producing machines, power-using machines, and machines inside buildings.

Mechanical engineers also get paid well and generally receive many benefits and there is about 288,800 jobs that will hire, last calculated in 2016 by Bureau of Labor Statistics. Mechanical engineering started back in the time of ancient Greece and China were thing such as screw pumps, steam engines, clocks, and seismometer were invented. In the Middle Ages mechanical engineers invented things such as the camshaft, chain drives, escarpments, and crankshafts.

In 1825,  the U.S had three mechanical engineering schools such as the U.S. Military Academy, Norwich University, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.Mechanical engineers earn a median salary of about $84,190 per year which is about $40.

48 per hour. The best paid mechanical engineers earn about $131,350 per year, while the lowest paid mechanical engineers earn less than $54,420. Mechanical engineers also make more money than mechanical engineering technicians, mechanical drafters, and electric-mechanical technicians. The highest paid in the mechanical engineering profession work in the areas of Anchorage, Alaska, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, San Jose, California, and the city of Tyler, Texas. The best paying states for the mechanical engineering profession are Alaska ($138,370), the District of Columbia ($108,340), New Mexico ($108,140), Louisiana ($104,020), and Texas ($103,060).

In conclusion you can see that the amount of money mechanical engineers make depend on many things such as the location the city they work in and the country they work in.Mechanical engineers are required to earn a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at minimum, and may pursue graduate degrees in the field. Mechanical engineer prospects in all states are required by the state to take a license test in order to become a Professional Engineer (PE) otherwise known as a PE license.

Mechanical engineers then need to undergo work experience under the supervision of licensed engineer, then candidates must pass the “Fundamentals of Engineering and Principles and Practice of Engineering tests”, that is administered by the “National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying.” As you can see, the process of becoming a mechanical engineer takes a lot of dedication.Mechanical engineers usually work full time which is about 40 hours a week or 5.7 hours a day.

They also work about 2080 hours a year which also means that they spend only 6680 hours not working. Mechanical engineers have only four ranks the first being an entry level position, who are only assigned to simple task or projects while going through a formal training process. Then once they get promoted, they will become a senior engineer which means that they are an expert in the company. The second promotion usually takes about 5-7 years in the field, but if he or she is highly skilled they can get promoted much earlier.

Once they become a senior engineer they might be able to use different types of softwares such as an analysis software which allows them to do more advanced projects. The next promotion is supervisor which means that they will have the responsibility of supervising a small team of engineers or technicians. Once they are a supervisor their duties will be split between managing their team and mechanical design such as structural analysis or failure testing. The final rank is a manager which is a huge step in a career as a mechanical engineer. Managers are in charge of a larger team of employees, and their responsibility is to organize all of their group’s projects. Managers also have a budget for each project and will decide how and when to spend the company’s money. Mechanical engineers get many benefits such as medical, dental, and vision insurance. They also get vacations, sick days, holidays off, and retirement benefits.

Sometimes they get additional benefits from employers such as profit sharing, disability insurance, or education assistance. Other benefits are that they do not have to travel a lot so you can spend more time with their families. As you can see, becoming a mechanical engineers can give you many benefits that will lead to a successful career/life. Some of the most famous mechanical engineers consist of James Watt (1736-1819), Nikola Tesla (1856-1943), George Stephenson (1781-1848), and Rudolf Diesel (1858-1913), but that’s not even close to how many famous mechanical engineer there are. James Watt was recognized by many scientist for improving the steam engine, invented the rotary engine, and the steam locomotive. Nikola Tesla was best known for helping the design of the modern alternating current.

George Stephenson was known for building steam locomotives for the first railways and he was nicknamed the “Father of the Railway.” Rudolf Diesel was known for inventing the first diesel engine and for his mysterious death. In conclusion, there are many great mechanical engineers that have changed the world in ways we can’t imagine. In conclusion, mechanical engineers have an interesting job that sounds very challenging but in the end the salary and the benefits will definitely pay off, and being a mechanical engineer will definitely lead to a successful career, and being mechanical engineers also has many jobs open at the time and is expected to grow 9% in 2026.
