The integumentary system is made up of several organs. The organs include the hair, nails, skin as well as the exocrine glands.
Skin
The size of the skin is only just a few millimeters in terms of thickness. However, that does not mean it is a small organ. The largest organ in the human body is the skin we have. The weight of the skin of an average person is about 10 pounds. Also, its estimated surface area is about 20 square feet. It is important in that is acts as the outer protective barrier (Morton, Fontaine, Hudak & Gallo, 2017). Among the major roles of the skin include the protection of the body from numerous harmful substances such as UV light, many chemicals which people are exposed to on a daily basis as well as physical damage. The skin has three main parts. These include the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis.
Hair
Dead keratinocytes are the ones forming hair. It is an accessory organ of the skin and most parts of the body are covered with hair. There are only a few areas of the body without hair. These include the palmar surface of the hands, lips, labia minora as well as glans penis and plantar surface of the feet. Working together with the skin, the hairs act as protective structures of the body. They protect the body from UV light, excessive water loss and also keep the body warm (Morton, Fontaine, Hudak & Gallo, 2017). They are capable of trapping warm air on around the skin, hence ensuring that the body is kept warm. The main parts of the hair are the shaft, the hair follicle and the root.
Nails
The nails are also categorized as accessory organs of the skin. They are made up of hardened keratinocytes. Their main use is reinforcement. Also, the can scrape and manipulate small objects. They play a very crucial role in preventing the infection of the tissue which is below them.
Glands
There are several glands forming part of the system. These glands include the sudoriferous glands, sebaceous glands as well as ceruminous glands.
The sudoriferous glands are of two types, the eccrine and the apocrine. The apocrine sweat glands are important for secreting water and sodium (Morton, Fontaine, Hudak & Gallo, 2017). Whereas, the eccrine sweat glands are important for the regulation of the body temperature.
Sebaceous glands secrete sebum. These are found all over the body except on the sole of the feet and the palms. Sebum’s importance is its waterproof characteristics and its ability to increase the skin’s elasticity.
Ceruminous glands are located in the ear canal. They are important as they produce wax, which is very important in the protection of the ear from infection. The wax also traps any foreign material entering the ears.
