Is social media good for our society?

Social media is the
use of applications and websites that help users create and post personal content
about their daily lives. On these sites, users may develop personal profiles, communicate
with family and friends, investigate, share photos, music, their own thoughts
on certain issues, and more. Many advocates for social media say that these applications
offer online communities that promote interaction with friends, family, and
even strangers. These apps provide valuable resources to find and gather valuable
information. Opponents of social media use say that it will harmfully effect
face-to-face communication; waste of time; alters young children brains and
behavior. There are many gray areas surrounding the question of social media
use nowadays and the public wonders if it is good for our society.

Baby boomers and
every generation after them believe that social media does make a wonderful
contribution to communities around the world. One example is it makes it easier
for someone to stay in close contact with relatives, friends, or even a
significant other. People believe that adding the internet helps increase these
relationships over time. For example, in the short story ” I had a nice time
with you. On the App.”, Mr. Schildkrout said, “technology is where some of the most beautiful interactions
happen and deepen”. (397). It does not even have to include family or
friends, the great thing about social media is that strangers have the possibility
of interacting and becoming friends. This option that social media brings to us
allows people to expands on social horizons and interact with new people across
the world.  These social media sites
cultivate friendship and helps maintain relationships because it allows people
to get in touch on a personal without meeting face-to-face. For example,
“In many cases, adding the Internet to the mix can strengthen
a relationship over all, because online interactions have their own kind of
entertaining rapport that can coexist with their offline counterparts” (396),
Ms. Turkle states. These social
media applications help others keep in touch and create relationships across
the globe. Social media also gives people a platform to express their feelings
and speak upon their beliefs. Whether its political, or personal people now
have the luxury of posting anything that is on their mind. These people share
have the ability to share to the world their favorite music, how the president
of the United States is an unstable idiot with no heart, or just post a picture
of their pets. It is harder feel embarrassment over the internet than in person
so people tend to be more open about themselves, or they just find it easier to
vent their feelings. Baby boomers and later generation also have the resources that
no older generation did. With the use of social media and different websites
these people now have access to billions of different sources of information. This
offers student, teachers, and anyone else valuable access to educational
support. Baby boomers and younger generations conclude that technology and social
media use are vital for progressing and becoming a more inclusive society.

On
the other hand, any people are not too fond of the idea of social media. Many
people of the “The Greatest Generation”, or certain parents believe that social
media is damaging society. Many of these people believe that living through the
internet and social media are detrimental to in person communication. For example,
Ms. Turkle said “technology-saturated types could forget
what a face-to-face interaction can do.”. Because of this older people feel
that the younger generations are always glued to their smartphone and no one
understands how important it is to interact with one another. In “The
Influencing Machine” Brooke Gladstone touches on this subject when she says “People
always see the future and despair that the latest gizmo will destroy our
concentration, memory, communities, our mental and physical health”.

(338). Technology is destroying are sanity. Another reason that The older
generation and some parents believe social media is unacceptable is because it
is dangerous, especially for young pre-teens. There are many pedophiles looking
for their newest victim online and they can find almost any information about a
little kid just looking through their profile. Obviously, this is the biggest
concern for parents and it should be for everyone else too. Cyberbullying is
also a tragic epidemic that is now a thing through the use of social media. Many
kids have committed suicide because of the online hate they receive from
various users. It is unfortunate and there needs to be an end to it. In addition
to that, social media can also ruin peoples career or harm their social life.

If someone says one wrong thing, then they can become a social outcast within a
day. Social media is very dangerous and has even ended people’s relationships,
careers, and in the most extreme cases, their life; I think that’s what the
older generation and many parents agree with.

Personally, I believe that social
media does more harm than good to society. People do not understand how
dangerous it is to post your personal information on the internet. There should
also be no reason that kids are taking their lives because of hateful Instagram
comments. People do not know how to use social media and the risk it comes with
it; they need to be educated. I just enjoy face-face-face interactions. I
believe that social is bad for our society because of the harm it cause to
people and the damage it can do to their lives.
