Introduction relation can result in inconveniences due to

Database is an integral part of the business world.
A database management system solves business problems such as having a simple,
integrated view of data, data mart and niche application consolidation,
intelligent views of data and real-time business intelligent data.

There are two main types of databases: relational
database and no-relational database. In this essay, I will explain how a
relational database solution can be applied to a current business problem,
particularly data redundancy.

Relational database is a collection of data items
which has been structured as a set of indexed tables from which data can be
accessed without having to reorganize the database tables (Alagic, 1986). Each table or relation contains one or
more data categories in columns while each row contains data defined by the
columns. A typical example is a phone book, whereby each column contains
specific information such as a name, address or a phone number. The row might
represent individual entries which are sorted by the column.

Relational database is also known as Structured
Query Language (SQL) database. The data has to be structured systematically in
order to be effective (Hopkins, 2010). A well-designed
relation minimizes data redundancy. A poorly designed relation can result in inconveniences
due to its rigidity.

Businesses around the world have to deal with large
volumes of data records which may range from financial transactions to employee
records. Most organizations lack an effective means of organizing the data.
This means that retrieving any kind of information becomes a headache because
it’s time consuming.

I also noticed that there’s the likelihood of data
redundancy in an organization lacking the database management system. For
example, a small-scale business may store employee records in the typical
record-writing way, and make erroneous entries on people with similar attributes
such as names or residence. A database management system uses a primary key,
which uniquely identifies each record in a table. This means that each entry in
a table won’t have the same attributes to another similar entry.

Relational database was created to tackle the
emerging problems encountered by businesses worldwide. It solve the problem of
data organization, manipulation, retrieval and management.

Information will be handled in SQL Database

SQL is responsible for querying and manipulating
information stored in a particular database management system in an
organization. It is handled by SQL developers and database programmers. For example,
an SQL programmer may create a table for financial transactions done with a
particular company. The columns of the table may include information such as
date, amount paid, balance and payment details. The rows are filled with data
which corresponds to the information in the column.

Data entry is done by various employees, since the database
software can be used by any department. For instance, a receptionist might need
the system to keep records of all visitors and office appointments. A human
resource manager might need the software to keep track of all employees in the
organization. Once data is included in the system, it’s easy to manage and
share across all devices and can also be manipulated.

of Relational Database Solution

data retrieval

SQL queries can be used to retrieve large volumes of
records from a database quickly and efficiently. For example, you can easily
get the company invoice from a certain period of the year from a database
software than from a storage file. This saves time and resources.

Access privileges

It’s easy
to organize data records and add an access privilege, whereby top members of
the organization can access all types of data while the lower members have some
restrictions. This promotes confidentiality and data integrity.

Easy to manage

Using standard
SQL, it’s easier to manage database systems without having to learn a lot of
technical information and programming. This means less resource and time to train
staffs on using the database software.

Free and available

There are
free database software such as MySQL and MariaDB. They are available for
download and actively supported by the developing communities and other
organizations. This saves on costs.

SQL can
run on mainframes, desktops, laptops, servers, smartphones, client server and
application server. Databases using SQL can be moved from one device to another
without an issue. This presents an advantage to multinational companies who are
far away and may need to sync information.

such as Amazon and Google have implemented relational database model and were
successful (Look at what Google and Amazon are doing with
databases: That’s your future, 2014). Google has a huge
amount of data and information, which is easily managed by the SQL server.

You have seen the benefits of relational database
and the need for implementation in today’s business organization. It’s far much
cheaper to implement relational database software, and it also directly affects
the day-to-day operations of an organization. With the above facts, I hope that
you will consider approving my project.
