The short story “insignificant gestures”, is about a man, there is working down in Africa as a doctor. While working down in Africa he was living in a little white house. At his house there where a servant named Celia, who he became really close with. He started drawing a lot with her, and he was really surprised about how talented she was. But one day, Celia was found behind her mother hut beating up really badly. And where therefor sent to a hospital, but a couple of days later, she was dead, which the doctor didn’t understand, but they found out that had died of meningitis. The doctor was really devastated after the loss of his close friend, so he travelled back home to Great Britain.
The main character in the story is the doctor, the doctor is now back in Britain and is working as a psychiatrist. He often sees himself in some of his patient because he is also very broken inside after his trip to Africa, where he lost his very close friend Celia. The doctor is feeling a lot of guilt over the loss of his friend Celia, because he could have saved if he had just exanimated her he could have found out the she had meningitis and he could have saved her with a simple injection of penicillin. But instead he listened to an old town woman.
The doctor was a very proud man, because he did not want servant to begin with because he would rather do the everything be himself, and he did not see the meaning of him having a servant when he could do all these things be himself. But the hospital matron convinced him to keep the servant because she was only there to earn money for her family, and the family could not live without the money she earned for them, so the doctor kept his young servant Celia.
He often used drawing as place to escape, where it was just him and he could fell free, but at some point in the story he let Celia join him while he was drawing, and he quickly realized the she was very good at it, and they started drawing together more and more, and this was probably a mayor fact in their friendship, because they had this together. Often when they were drawing together they did not even speak to each other, they just sat there together in total silence on focused on their drawing.
