In weakness and the loss of a dream,

In “The Scarlet Letter”, Nathaniel Hawthorne setting up a sad story about human weakness and the loss of a dream, “The founders of a new colony, whatever Utopia of human virtue and happiness”. It is really a story of hope, because there is always hope no matter how dark it looks. The prison is a dark and dreary place, but the little and the rose-bush offers brightness and hope, showing that there is always something good in life to offset the bad and lead one back to hope for the future.

With his introduction, the author shows the reader “the beetle-browed and gloomy front” of the prison door and talks about the colony’s “first burial-ground”, a cemetery in the church yard. “The founders of a new Utopia” still must have a place for the dead and for people who break the law. No matter how high our hopes, there is always reality around the corner.

Even in this dark and dreary place that looks hopeless, there is there is “some sweet moral blossom” that makes us feel like maybe we will be ok in the end.
