In 2015, there was a total of 1.25 million reported violent crimes in the U.S.
In 2016, there were 17,250 murders and nonnegligent manslaughters in the U.S. Almost 20,000 people were killed by another person in the U.S. alone.
The amount of people being killed by another person should be way less, but how can violence be stopped? You can end violence generally by educating all children, ending poverty, strengthening gun laws, and keeping children involved in some type of extracurricular activity.Violence rates in the U.S can be lowered by giving all children a good education and preparing them for life. If all children are able to obtain an education they are more likely to stay on track to further their education in the future and work toward getting a good stable job. Ensuring that a student graduates at least high school can lower crime exponentially and save money. “The nation could save as much as $18.5 billion in annual crime costs if the high school male graduation rate increased by only 5 percentage points” (Report from the Alliance for Excellent Education finds, 2013).
This shows that a lot of crime is being affected by education rates in the country. Low education rates lead to a lot of crimes which make the government use taxpayer money to pay for the inmates.People that are educated are less likely to commit crimes.
When someone has an education they are more likely going to be focused on making money instead of stealing or killing for money. “punishment is likely to be more costly for the more educated. Incarceration implies time out of the labor market, which is more costly for high earners. Furthermore, previous studies estimate that the stigma of a criminal conviction is larger for white collar workers than blue collar workers” (Lochner, Moretti 4). This shows that people with an education are less likely to commit crimes because they have enough money to sustain themselves and provide for their families.
People that do not have an education are more likely to do crimes because their jobs aren’t giving them enough money to sustain their families. Those are just a couple of reasons why all people should obtain an education at a young age. By ending poverty you could lower crime rates and violence generally. Poverty is one of the greatest factors in violence.
If someone is poor it is more likely for them to commit a crime. Young people living in poverty are more likely to rely on violence to solve their issues. “Presents findings from 2008 to 2012 on the relationship between households that were above or below the federal poverty level and nonfatal violent victimization, including rape or sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault. For the period 2008–12—Persons in poor households at or below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) (39.8 per 1,000) had more than double the rate of violent victimization as persons in high-income households (16.9 per 1,000)”(Bureau of Justice Statistics). This shows that people living below the federal poverty line are more likely to fall victim to or commit crimes. They have more than double the rate of victimization than people with high-income, people are more susceptible to violence because of their amount of iincome.
If poverty in the U.S is generally lowered, much of the crime happening would go down. The places people live also affect the crime rates if they are poor. In urban areas it is probable that more crime would happen.
“poor whites (46.4 per 1,000) and poor blacks (43.4 per 1,000)”(Bureau of Justice Statistics).
This shows the crime rates overall, not including rural or urban areas. “Poor urban blacks (51.3 per 1,000) had rates of violence similar to poor urban whites (56.4 per 1,000)”(Bureau of Justice Statistics). Here we see that the crime rates to not differ very much due to race but the location.
These statistics are from poor people living in urban areas and that rates are very high. Poverty is a great factor to violence overall and lowering it would greatly lower crime rates all over the United States. If gun laws are strengthened in the United States the crime rates go down. By strengthening gun laws you are able to keep legal weapons in the hands of people that are registered in the U.S and are mentally capable of utilizing a firearm. “The United States has 88.
8 guns per 100 people, or about 270,000,000 guns, which is the highest total and per capita number in the world. 22% of Americans own one or more guns (35% of men and 12% of women)”(ProCon.org). This shows that americans have the ability to own guns and they do. One fifth of the population of the U.
S. has guns. These are the statistics for the guns that are owned legally. MAny guns in the U.S. are owned illegally as well and the government should do more to control that. Guns should not be in the hands of criminals or the mentally incapable.
People with guns already go through background checks when they buy guns legally, but the federal government should do more. “The number of background checks performed through the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System has climbed from around 8.5 million in 2000 to more than 23 million in 2015″( Danielle Kurtzleben/NPR). In fifteen years background checks done by the FBI went up by 14.5 million. More than double the amount of background checks due to things like mass shootings and terrorism. There have been many cases like this in the U.
S. and the amount of guns would go down if the government regulated them more. If people that bought guns legally had a more thorough background check not as many people would own guns. People that have mental illnesses are not disqualified from being able to own a gun automatically so there are people with mental illnesses that are able to obtain guns. These are a couple of reasons why the federal government should regulate guns and gun laws more. Maintaining Children involved in extracurricular activities could lower crime rates.
“784 juveniles were arrested for murder. 2,198 juveniles were arrested for forcible rape. 35,001 juveniles were arrested for aggravated assault”(TeenHelp.com).
This is a large amount of the young population of the U.S. Many of these teenagers are committing these crimes for reasons previously mentioned like poverty or lack of gun control. Teenagers need to be exposed to good role models and good skills from a young age. Kids that are placed in a sport or club at a young age or more likely to try to develop those skills further or gain more experience. Many children that do activities outside of school are kept from being on the streets and doing things they would regret.
The children involved also gain a sense of pride and are encouraged by good influences or friends that keep them on the right track. Students or children that are in extracurricular activities are held to higher standards than kids who are not involved. They are held to higher standards because they are either required to or are expected to get good grades in school in order to keep participating in their activities. Overall extracurricular activities give students less time to be mischievous and do bad things. They do not have time to do these things because they are always focused on something good and spend their time at school instead of the streets.
Universities like Northeastern university have also confirmed these theories with actual studies they have done. That is why children should be involved in extracurricular activities from a young age. Crime rates in the U.S.
are very high and need to be lowered. They need to be lowered generally by educating all children, ending poverty, strengthening gun laws, and involving children and teens in some type of extracurricular activity from a young age. If all these points are taken into action, crime rates in the United States would be lowered considerably.
