addition to the trends that influence nursing practice, there are a variety of
trends that greatly impact nursing education. These trends, which are guided by
the ever-changing health care system, significantly influence the content,
learning process, and evaluation methods used in a variety of different nursing
programs, and have even led to the development of new degrees and majors (Cherry
& Jacob, 2013). This allows for nurses to be integrated into the profession
coming from a variety of different nursing education backgrounds. With the
continuation of emerging educational trends, subsequent changes in the number,
qualifications, requirements, and diversity of students also emerge (Cherry
& Jacob, 2013).

One of
the major trends seen in nursing education that has also applied to my experience
with nursing education is the increase in diversity among nursing students.  Ethnic and racial diversity of nursing
students has increased dramatically; students are entering nursing programs at
an older age, bringing a variety of personal and professional experiences to
the classroom (Heller, Oros, & Durney-Crowley, 2000). Being in an
accelerated nursing program, I have met fellow classmates of varying ages and
backgrounds, all of which come from an array of educational experiences. While many
of my classmates have some form of a science or health-related background, some
do not. I believe this has contributed to many different viewpoints and ways to
decipher different scenarios during both classroom discussions and in the
clinical setting. In addition to the differences in previous education, some
classmates have been previously immersed in professional careers while others
come from other undergraduate programs, all of which increase diversity.

The
trend of changing demographics and background diversity among nursing students
will likely continue to positively impact the nursing profession. There is an
unspoken assumption that increasing workforce diversity will lead to decreased
health disparities among racial and ethnic minority populations (Phillips &
Malone, 2014). With an increase in diversity of patient demographics, educational,
and therefore, workforce, diversity will allow for a conglomeration of different
considerations and viewpoints when implementing holistic patient care. These
considerations and viewpoints can arise from the different educational,
professional, and ethnic backgrounds. Ultimately, learning from the experience
of diverse people in the classroom allows for an increased knowledge of
different customs, beliefs, practices, and expectations, which can then be
utilized in the clinical setting (Cherry & Jacob, 2014).  Therefore, this trend of student diversity in
nursing education programs has substantial benefits for the future generations
of nursing.
