Imperialism is when an industrialized nation takes control of other of other nations, lands or territories for economic or political gain. There were many reasons why imperialism took place but the main reason was economic.

Industrialized nations had wealth, factories, and machinery that could produce weapons which allowed them to conquer and control large populations of people. The British had a huge military advantage. The wealthy country also allowed them to pay for large firearms.

The steamships made travel faster and farther and it was easier to transport cargo. The modern inventions made it easier to overpower the natives. The native people were at a huge disadvantage because of the amount of weapons and limited resources. When the colonies added up, it created an empire making it very valuable and more profitable. Imperialism had many pros and cons. Overall, I believe it was a negative because of the overpowering of the natives. There was a big down fall in the civilizations wealth and lifestyle while there was a rise in the economy for the mother countries with more power and earlier development. India, South America, China, and Africa were all affected by Imperialism.

There were changes in the economy, military, and culture. For countries such as Britain and France they had many benefits. For example, they had more land which gave them more power. They were able to get the native people to work. It was a rise for the economy and gave them more resources. The pros to imperialism could include the transportation and new development for the civilization.

They were able to make trades, send letters, and transfer goods through roads and railroads. Even with these improvements there were harsh labor environments. Many peasants were affected by disease or died of starvation. The native people were separated from family members and forced into small homes where they worked long days and many hours. Many of the Indians were put out of business and had nothing to live off of.

As a result, India’s economy began to go down as Britain’s economy began to rise. An example of imperialism was when India was colonized by the British. India was an extremely valuable colony. The British would take a resource like cotton, ship it from India to Britain to create textiles, then the textiles were shipped back to India or sold to other colonies which generated huge profits. Britain was getting cotton for free. They forced the Indians to buy the textiles to create large amounts of money. They even created laws that Indians were prohibited from making their own textiles or buying them from another nation.

This was great for the British and bad for the Indian natives. Children also had to serve in the military and British government. The positive side would be that children were given an education and became stronger.

The young men were fighting for no benefit of their own. They were forced to fight while Britain’s intentions were to make profit and have free labor. As you can see, imperialism had a massive effect on India which overruled the lifestyle and culture. Overall imperialism was not a benefit for our world. It lead to lots of suffering and slavery that was unneeded and disrespectful. Imperialism promoted racism as countries were owning other countries.

It led to the mother countries to believe that they were the most powerful. Slave trade was established, riots and protests, rivalries, and many cultures were ignored as more colonies were established and created into empires. Clearly, Imperialism’s cons outweigh the pros. It is not a very effective action and will mostly result in rebellion and ultimately death.
