After World War II, many veterans were injured and needed rehabilitation. Same with civilians who were taken into war. The number of soldiers killed or injured with a lifelong disability was extreme. Doctor Ludwig Guttmann saw this as an opportunity to aid the wounded. He pursued seeing those with spinal and other life-shortening disabilities to have a longer life expectancy and a greater estimate of survival. By doing so, he opened Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in England. Dr. Ludwig became prestige by organizing an innovative way of rehabilitation, he added the element of sports to help with recovery. The rehabilitation sport soon transformed into a wheelchair competition sport rather a recreational sport. On July 29, 1948, the first day of the London Olympic Games, Dr. Ludwig formed the first wheelchair competition, which he named the Stoke Mandeville Games, later to be known the Paralympic Games. The athletes participated in the archery event, with 2 female and 14 male service men and women. The games developed what we know today, the Paralympics, including 526 medal events and 22 sports.Major Players: Ludwig GuttmannBIG IDEAS: Inventiveness, Opportunity, Transformative, Advancement, Inspirational CURRENT EVENTSEvent: Alabama Wins National ChampionshipDate: January 8, 2018Description: This year in the College Football National Championship, Alabama and Georgia made it to the championship game. In the locker room, Saban took his starting quarterback, Jalen Hurts, who wasn’t playing his best game and pulled him out of the game. Nick spoke to his freshman quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, who had never started for Alabama or played an entire game. Tua Tagovailoa played the full 2nd half and brought the game home for Alabama. Research shows Apple products are the most popular by the whole of teens and children. Many people don’t grasp how addictive social media and Apple products have developed into. What makes the social media apps and technology so addictive is dopamine. Dopamine is the same chemical the body releases that makes drugs and gambling so addictive for individuals. With technology, once you become addictive it’s arduous to attempt stopping. Professor Jean Twenge researched youths who spend more time on their apple product, 3-5 hours, are more likely to become depressed and addictive. Many teens become depressed from the cause of their self-image and reputation. They try to become someone who acquires the best traits and goals of what social media exhibits, and overall become disappointed in what they “don’t have”. CalSTRS and Jana Partners have informed Apple of what society and social media is becoming. Along with that, they’ve asked Apple to form the design of the devices and apps to become less addictive. On the opposing side, they are attempting to figure out whether it’s the Apple devices itself, or just the internet in general.Major Players: CalSTRS, Jana Partners, Apple Co., Jean TwengeBIG IDEAS: Addiction, Controlling, Obsessive, Consciousness, SeriousLITERATUREEvent: Charlotte’s Web by E.B.
