From the Republican Platform, 2016: “Climate Change is a political mechanism, not an unbiased scientific institution…intolerance toward scientists and others who dissent from its orthodoxy. We will evaluate its recommendations accordingly.”This alone should make it clear that the Republicans have no regard whatsoever for the health of our future planet. The legislative, executive, and judicial branches all have a role to play in reducing U.
S. greenhouse gas emissions and building resilient communities.Congress has debated climate change for over 30 years. “Laws and congressionally approved funding have led to new programs to reduce emissions and incentives to speed the deployment of clean energy.”In 1992, President George H.W. Bush signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which committed all nations to take action and laid the foundation for future agreements.
As the years went by, many action on climate kept happening. The executive branch agrees on existing law through regulation and programs. These laws touch the work of nearly every federal agency. Including the department on transportation and defense.
During President Obama presidency, he called for more scientist involvement in education and announced new initiatives for science research and education, challenging scientists to use their knowledge to think about innovative ways to engage young people in science (Nat Neurosci, 2009). His goal was to reduce the level of carbon dioxide by 32%. President Obama did this by reducing carbon pollution from power plants, expanding the clean energy economy, cutting energy wastes from home and many more. According to data, all of Obama’s goal to reduce carbon dioxide was a success.
During 2008-2010 many major climate legislation was proposed. In 2012, Donald Trump tweeted that global warming was created by and for the Chinese. Therefore, the Trump administration withdrew the U.S. government’s $2 billion pledge to the Green Climate Fund, an organization led by developed countries to finance renewable energy and climate change adaptation projects, with Trump saying the commitment cost the U.
S. a “vast fortune.”(Worlan, Justion 2017). He stated in 2015 ” Cut the EPA; what they do is a disgrace.” EPA was established in December 1970 under President Richard Nixon. The EPA is an agency of the United States federal government whose mission is to protect human and environmental health.
Trump’s denial of human-induced global warming continues to threaten a planet already on fire. As a result, California, the biggest state by population is suing Donald Trump. According to the New York Times, Mr. Becerra stated”California is not looking to pick a fight, but if Trump is trying to get in our way, that’s when we go at it.”. Public opinion research shows that many Americans now believe that climate change is a problem and supports steps to cut carbon pollution. However, Donald Trump believes that climate change is a hoax, this shows how much he cares about it.
