Several educators use active learning pedagogies such as collaborative learning to accomplish the objectives (Tsay & Brady, 2010).
According to Wisconsin’s Guiding Principles for Teaching and Learning, collaborative learning is a teaching and learning approach that necessitates students to share intellectual efforts and to work, learn, and create meaning about a subject matter together. Students work in groups with the aim to jointly produce results and search for answers, explanations, and meanings (Smith ; MacGregor, 1992). Through collaborative learning, teachers aim to produce intellectually stronger students (Brown, 2008). Collaborative learning helps educators enhance education in classes for it concentrates on small yet cooperative groups. (Chen, 2017).
In addition, Chen (2017) also stated that teachers motivate students to work collaboratively by forming them into groups to review homework, do daily class worksheets, participate in discussions, and complete hands-on activities. Collaborative learning enables students to think and learn in an active, systematic way with one another about a particular lesson (Daniels ; Walker, 2001).
