Chungking express is a drama film that
consist of 2 different stories of 2 different police who just dumped by their
girlfriend and both of them are trying to move on. Most of the characters in
the film are regular people that don’t receive much attention from society,
they are policeman, fast food chain worker and drug smuggler. All of them live
in Hong Kong which is always crowded and busy, but in fact each of their soul
are lonely because they don’t have much friends, family and lover, they survive
on their own and even if they fall in love they don’t show it. Instead, they
smoke and they stare and slowly their love goes away. It is just another day
for them.

    Wong uses a very
interesting way of story telling by breaking the film into 2 different part,
each part is lead by different character with similar background but different
story.  Both stories are simply set side
by side instead of cross cut. Therefore, this film is more like a parallel
comparison in a lot of aspects.

2 Heartbroken Policemen

Police 223
Police 663

     First of all,
although they are both policemen and the similarity they both share is that
they just dumped by their own girlfriend, but if you get into a closer look,
they are actually quite different individual. Based on the introduction shot of
these two policemen, police 223 is chasing after a criminal, he didn’t wear his
uniform and from here we can tell that he is an undercover police. While as for
police 663, he is on his uniform and is patrolling. Therefore, based on their
first appearance, we can tell that police 223 is more adventurous and like
challenges while in contrast police 663 prefer to have a normal life doing
normal daily task. Besides, even when police 223 break up with his girlfriend, he
calls around May’s family so to remind his girlfriend about him, he still put
some hope that his girlfriend will get back to him before 1st of May
but police 663 didn’t do the same thing, he still carry on his daily duty, he didn’t
do anything to win her back, he lose hope easily. Other than that, when police
223 saw a woman with blonde wig, he takes the initiative to talk to her while
in part 2, Faye (the fast-food shop worker) is the one who is taking the initiatives
instead of police 663. Talking about this, there is actually a scene in part 2
when the police 663 helps Faye to carry the basket. When police 663 ask Faye
what she is saving up the money for. She said that she is saving for her trip
to California and she did asked police 663 to join along but what police 663
reply is “We’ll see”. We can say that police 223 is more willing to change while
police 663 is resist to change his life.

Time

Time is a very important aspect in
the film Chungking Express. In the
first part, it’s more about deadlines. Police 223 gives May 30 days until 1st
May to come back to him. The woman with blonde wig is given a deadline (1st
May) by her boss to smuggler the drug or else she will get kill. End up on the 1st
May, Police 223 decides to move on from his break up while as for the woman,
she kills her boss and leaves Hong Kong. Both of them are free from the
deadline on that day.

      In part 2, the
concept of time is more of a free kind. Faye, like the woman in part one,
leaves Hong Kong. When she comes back after a year, she becomes a stewardess while
most importantly Police 663 leaves his job and open up a new shop. He changes,
he leaves his routine.

Images shows life before and
after they change. You can also see visual similarities. As example, they are
beside the aquarium and standing at the counter.

Food

In this film, men tend to goes with the
same food, while the women want to try the others. Therefore, the food helps to
illustrate the men’ will power to change. May likes pineapple, so when she
breaks up with police 223, police 223 decides to buy a can of pineapple for a
continuously 30 days that will all expire on May 1. But in the end, turns out
May didn’t return to him, so he finishes all the 30 can of pineapple. When he
meets the woman in the bar, he asks her whether she likes pineapple. After that,
her voice over comes in, “Knowing someone doesn’t mean keeping them. People
change. A person may like pineapple today and something else tomorrow.” Turn
out what she said is true. As both of them rest in the room after drinking,
Police 223 had 4 sets of hamburgers, salads, and fries. Signaling is change.
