Decade: 1940’s By: Waqar Ahmed The presidents of the 1940’s were Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. Truman was actually the vice president of Roosevelt and then succeeded him after his death during World War II. Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882.

He served in office from March 4, 1933 – April 12, 1945. Roosevelt was a democratic president who attended Harvard University. On the other hand Truman was born on May 8, 1884. Truman served in office from April 12, 1945 – January 20, 1953.

He was also a democratic president who served in the military during World War I. Some of the special political events of the 1940’s were events such as when Japan attacked pearl harbor in 1941. Also in 1943 Russia wins at Stalingrad. And unconditional surrender ias demanded. Some of the things that happen in 1944 was that France was invaded, the bombing of Japan began, and Philippines is liberated. In 1947 the Cold War begin and in 1949 Russia explodes the bomb, and Communists control Russia.

There were lots of great and legendary sporting events during the 1940’s such as when in 1941 when Ted Williams finished  .406 in 1 season. That is pretty much the last time we will ever witness season-long batting average of over .400. Also in 1941 Joe DiMaggio hits in 56 straight games! That is something that just can’t be done in the modern era.

Now it’s a big deal if players go past 25. Another huge event that happened in the 40’s was in 1945 when the 3-point line was invented. This line has made some careers for people and has been the source of some of the greatest legendary buzzer-beaters. In 1940 another major event was that the Olympics were cancelled because of the World War. The last major event is in 1947 when NFL instituted (invented) the draft system followed by NBA, NHL, and the MLB. This goes to show how important of a decade 1940 was for sports in history.

Further on, in 1940, Benjamin O. Davis, Sr. became the General in the United States Army, and was the first African-American to have this position. Also in 1947, Jackie Robinson became a legendary baseball player, being part of the dodgers and also the first African-American to play baseball in the Major League. Finally in 1944 Mahatma Gandhi, an Indian independence leader was released from prison. But the pacifist was sadly assassinated in 1948.The main types of genres of music that were popular in the 40’s were pop, jazz, and country music, these genres are still popular to this day.

Some popular groups were Benny Goodman, The Andrews Sisters, The Ink Spots, Perry Como, The Mills Brothers, and The Carter Family.The prices were drastically different in the 1980’s compared to now. Eggs were 64 cents per dozen, flour was 25 cents for a 5 pound bag. A new house cost $3,920.00 and a gallon of gas was 11 cents. The average cost of new car was $850.

Some hourly paying jobs in the 1940’s were cashiers, waiters, dishwashers, and movie theater ushers and ticket takers.Most of the youth in the 1940’s for boys were suits. From solid, to striped or checkered it was mostly suits.

Youth girls on the other hand wore a checkered skirt with a snug fitting sweater over a blouse, and white socksIn the 1940’s not many people had tv’s so there were not many shows to be watched. One the reasons there weren’t a lot was because of the World War going on. Radio on the other hand was a very big thing, they gave news music and entertainment. Some popular radio hosts were Kate Smith and Arthur Godfrey. One of the popular radio shows was “The Whistler” which aired from 1942 to 1955, the show had a creepy narration that was spoken with the background of footsteps and a haunted theme song. Some popular movies that came out in the 1940’s “Bambi”, “Pinocchio”, and “Dumbo.
