David GuoKulikLA Block, 3-822 January 2017In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Dolphus Raymond, Tom Robinson, Boo Radley, Dill, and Jem are forced to deal with and face the evils of society. Tom Robinson, Jem, and Dill are people who start the book as innocent souls who haven’t been exposed to the world yet, but as the book progresses, they’re forced to deal with these things, and are as a result negatively impacted. Tom Robinson is killed because of society’s unjust actions and racism toward black people, Jem is crying in the face of evil and has his arm broken because of the hatred of adult society, and Dill is crying because he can’t understand why black people are treated so poorly by white people. Dolphus Raymond and Boo Radley are people who were negatively impacted in the past by society. Dolphus Raymond was forced to pretend to be a drunk in order to be left alone by whites who are racist against black people, and has to suffer through people thinking that he’s a bad person just because he prefers black people. Boo Radley has locked himself away from society because he can’t stand their racist ideals when he was confronted with them in the past. Therefore, people are negatively impacted by society, because they’re either forced to withstand people thinking that they were a bad person, and they also had to pretend to be a drunk, just because he wanted to be friendly with black people, killed because of the world’s racism and prejudice, locked away from society in order to avoid the badness of it, crying in the face of the evil of the world, or had his arm broken because of the hatred of adult society.

Dolphus Raymond is negatively affected by white community, because he has to pretend to be a drunk in order to be left alone. He’s also considered to be a bad person just because he lives with black people. First off, Dolphus is neglected by white people, and thought of to be an evil person, just because he hanged out with blacks. When Jem, Scout, and Dill are on their way to the courthouse to watch the trial of Tom Robinson, Jem remarks that Dolphus was sitting with the black people, and was drinking whiskey and being the drunk that he was.

“‘Always does. He likes ’em better’n he likes us, I reckon. Lives by himself way down near the county line. He’s got a colored woman and all sorts of mixed chillun. Show you some of ’em if we see ’em.’ ‘He doesn’t look like trash,’ said Dill.” (214) When Jem says that Dolphus likes black people more than white people, and Dill responds by saying that Dolphus didn’t look like trash, it shows that white people automatically assumes that Dolphus is trash just because he prefers blacks to whites.

This would once again negatively affect Dolphus because he’s being thought of as trash, and being neglected by white community because of him living how he wants to. In addition to this, we have another piece of evidence that proves that Dolphus Raymond is being negatively affected by society. Even though Dolphus Raymond is a good person, people still think of him as evil and bad just because he hangs out with the black community. When Dill and Scout are invited by Dolphus Raymond to come talk to him when Dill gets upset during the trial and is outside with Scout, Scout remarks that Dolphus was an evil man, even without getting to know him. “As Mr. Dolphus Raymond was an evil man I accepted his invitation reluctantly, but I followed Dill”(267). By saying that Mr. Dolphus Raymond was an evil man without even getting to know him, Scout reveals that Mr.

Dolphus Raymond was thought of as an evil man just because he was friendly with blacks. This would very negatively impact Dolphus Raymond’s life, because he would have to deal with others thinking he was a bad person even though he wasn’t at all. Finally, Dr. Dolphus Raymond has to pretend to be a drunk in order to be left alone by racist society, who can’t comprehend why a white person would want to live with trash like black people.

When Dill and Scout confront him when Dill gets upset during the trial, and goes outside to take a break, he tells us that he wasn’t actually a drunk and was trying to give the community “something to latch onto”. “‘Wh-oh yes, you mean why do I pretend? Well, it’s very simple,’ he said. ‘Some folks don’t-like the way I live.

Now I could say the hell with ’em, I don’t care if they don’t like it. I do say I don’t care if they don’t like it right enough-but I don’t say the hell with ’em, see?…’I try to give ’em a reason, you see.

It helps folks if they can latch onto a reason'” (268). Dolphus tells Scout and Dill that he pretends to be a drunk, and to drink whiskey out of his brown paper bag, to give other people a reason to why he seems to prefer the black community. Dolphus is negatively affected by society, as a result, because he has to go out of his way to pretend to be a drunk so people would leave him alone, and he also has to suffer through the humiliation of being one in the face of others, when he actually isn’t. Dolphus Raymond is forced to endure a lot in order to be left alone by the white community, and to live the life he wants to live. He’s forced to pretend to be a drunk in order to give society a reason to why he lives with black people, and is thought of as a evil person just because of him preferring black people over white people, even though he’s a good man at heart.

Therefore, he is very negatively affected by the racist society of Maycomb, who prefers white people over black people. Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are both negatively affected by society. Boo Radley is forced to stay inside because he wants to escape the badness of the world, and Tom Robinson is killed because of society’s racism against blacks. First, let’s consider Boo. Boo Radley, as realized by Jem at the end of chapter 23 when Scout and Jem were trying to figure out why racism and prejudice existed, doesn’t come out of his house because he doesn’t want to.

“‘Scout, I think I’m beginning to understand something. I think I’m beginning to understand why Boo Radley’s stayed shut up in the house all this time…it’s because he wants to stay inside.'” (304) Jem is telling us that Boo Radley wants to stay inside. It shows that Boo Radley didn’t want to come outside because he can’t deal with the evils of the world, and the corruptness of adult society. Therefore, because Boo couldn’t adapt to the reality of society, that racism existed and was present in the world, he was forced to stay indoors to escape the world, and was negatively impacted by it as a result.

Next, we’ll consider Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson, after losing the court case, and right before he goes to the prison camp, tells Atticus that there isn’t anything he can do to help him anymore. “…the last thing he said to Atticus before they took him down to the prison camp was, ‘Good-bye, Mr. Finch, there ain’t nothin’ you can do now, so there ain’t no use tryin’.'” (314) This shows that Tom doesn’t understand why the jury has convicted him of rape, even when he was completely innocent.

As a result, racist society has caused Tom to give up on life and the goodness of humans, and has also ruined Tom’s peaceful life that he had lead before he was wrongly convicted of rape. Society has impacted Tom’s life in a very negative way. Finally, let’s discuss Tom’s death. Atticus brings home the news that Tom Robinson was shot dead after he tried to escape from the prison camp, when Aunt Alexandra and the women from missionary circle were over at Atticus’ house. “‘Tom’s dead.’ Aunt Alexandra put her hands to her mouth. ‘They shot him,’ said Atticus.

‘He was running. It was during their exercise period. They said he just broke into a blind raving charge at the fence and started climbing over. RIght in front of them-‘” (315) Tom has decided to try to run off the premises of the prison camp because he can’t stand the racism and the wrongness of the world, as shown previously, and why he was there at the camp in the first place. He was killed by the prison guards, and as a result, was negatively affected, as he died because of the racism of society. All of these evidences prove that society negatively affected Boo Radley and Tom Robinson.

Boo Radley and Tom Robinson both couldn’t adapt to the reality that racism and evil did exist, and was prominent in society. Therefore, they were very negatively affected: Tom died because of him not being able to comprehend why people had to be so prejudiced against black people, and Boo Radley locked himself up in his house in order to avoid the evils of the world. Jem and Dill are both negatively impacted by the racist ideals of society. Both are forced into crying because they can’t understand the evil of the world, and Jem also has his arm broken because of the hatred of the adult society of Maycomb. First, let’s discuss Dill, and why started sobbing during the court case. Dolphus Raymond says, when Dill and Scout are taking a break from the court case, that Dill was crying because of the really bad treatment of black people by whites. “‘Cry about the simple hell people give other people-without even thinking.

Cry about the hell white people give colored folks, without even stopping to think that they’re people, too.'” (269) Dill has realized that there was racism and mistreatment of blacks in the world. Therefore, he cries and is negatively impacted by this because he can’t understand why racism existed, and why white people treated blacks so poorly, but just that it existed. Next, we’ll talk about Jem, and how he was crying as well because he couldn’t understand why such hatred of black people existed in the world. Jem, after the court case, doesn’t get why Tom was convicted even though he was obviously innocent. He has to accept the fact that racism and evil did exist, and that not all people were good. Scout says that “It was Jem’s turn to cry” (284) after Tom Robinson’s case, and the day after the case, Jem shows that he had been negatively impacted when he says that “‘I always thought Maycomb folks were the best in the world…'”. Jem is showing by saying this that after the Tom Robinson case, he had had his faith in the goodness of people damaged.

He doesn’t believe that all people in the world were ultimately good anymore, and he was therefore negatively affected by the world. Jem, near the end of the book when Scout and him were walking home from the pageant, has his arm broken because of Bob Ewell being hateful of Atticus for defending Tom Robinson. “When we were nearly to the road, I felt Jem’s hand leave me, felt him jerk backwards to the ground. More scuffling, and there came a dull crunching sound and Jem screamed.” (351) Bob Ewell let his hate for blacks and everyone who helped them consume him, and he proceeded to break Jem’s arm. This shows us that the racist ideals of society once again negatively impacts Jem, because Bob Ewells’ racist ways, and his hate for Atticus for defending a black person ultimately causes him to break Jem’s arm. Jem and Dill are forced to deal with the fact that evil and racism did exist, and that people weren’t all good. Having to deal with evils and racism caused a great deal of negativity in Jem and Dill: they both cried, and couldn’t understand why racism existed.

Evils and racism eventually also caused Jem to have his arm broken, as Bob Ewell’s’ racist ways, and his hate for blacks caused him to attack Atticus’s children because of him defending a black person. Most people are all negatively impacted by aspects of their society. In the novel, To Kill Mockingbird, innocent people like Dolphus Raymond, Jem, Dill, Boo Radley, and Tom Robinson are negatively impacted by the racist and unjust sides of their society, such as discrimination against black people, and the hatred of anyone who sides with black people.

To these people, the world is evil, and they’re changed for the worse as a result. This idea is important because it helps us see one of the themes of the book, which is people are born good but changed for the better or worse. Lee’s goal in creating a work of fiction around these ideals was to answer the question: “Are people born evil or good?”. By exposing these innocent people to the evils of the world, we discover that people are born good, as they are innocent at one point in their life, but then they’re exposed to the negativity of the world. As a result, they’re changed for either the better or worse depending on how they deal with the evils of the world. In this case, these people are changed for the worse.

In the real world of the 21st century, people are also negatively impacted by many things, especially the racist or biased views of their society, such as lingering stereotypes about black people being criminals and Muslims being terrorists. When these groups of people are exposed to these stereotypes about their own race, they start to be negatively impacted by them, even when they used to be good people, just like how people in To Kill a Mockingbird are negatively impacted by the racism of their society.
