Coalbed a clean burning fuel. Improve safety of

Coalbedmethane is an unconventional natural gas and a very good source of energy. Itis extracted from the coal beds or coal seams. The formation take place duringthe process of coalification and the transformation of plant into the coal.Eventually it is one of the most important energy resource with reserves andproduction. CBM stable source of energy because we can get it by various method. It can be recovered from underground coal before, during and after miningoperations.

For extraction and development of CBM horizontal and vertical wellsare used, which require drilling into the coal seam or coal beds and the water presentin the seam is removed to reduce hydrostatics pressure and released adsorbedgas out of the coal. Why CBM?CBMcan fulfil the national goals in India: Providea clean burning fuel. Improve safety of coal mining. Decrease methane vented tothe atmosphere that might cause global warming. Most importantly provides a means to use an abundant coal resource thatis too deep to mine. It minimizes the environmental impacts due to coal miningas methane is not lost to the environment anymore.

It is used for otherpurposes like steel manufacturing, fuel for industries, fertilizer manufacture, ceramics glass textiles etc. Indian scenario of CBMØ  India has the 3rd largest proven coal reserves andthus holds significant prospects for exploration and exploitation of CBM.Ø  CBM blocks were carved out by DGH in close interaction withMinistry of Coal (MOC) &Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI),Ranchi. Under the CBM policy, tilldate, four rounds of CBM biddingrounds have been implemented by MOP&NG, resulting in award of 33 CBM blocks including 2 blocks on Nomination and 1block through Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).Ø  The Gondwana sediments of eastern India host the bulk ofIndia’s coal reserves. The vast majority of the best prospective areas for CBM development are in eastern India, situated inDamodar Koel valley and Son valley.

Ø  CBM projects exist in Raniganj South, Raniganj East andRaniganj North areas in the Raniganj coalfield, the Parbatpur block in Jhariacoalfield and the East and west Bokaro coalfields. Son valley includes theSonhat North and Sohagpur East and West blocks.Ø  Natural gas from coalbed methane is likely to contribute to five per cent of national gas productionby 2017, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan, said in a tweet. He wrote thisafter a meeting with CBM producers in India who, he said, had invested Rs. 10,000crore collectively in CBM blocks.Ø  Coal bed methane refersto a reserve of natural gas stored in coal seams.

According to the DirectorateGeneral of Hydrocarbons, the country holds significant prospects forexploration and production of CBM, which is also seen as a clean energy source.Ø  Currently, GreatEastern Energy Corporation limited and Essar Oil and Reliance industrieslimited are the only three CBM-gas producing blocks in the country, fromseparate reserves in Raniganj, West Bengal and Sohagpur west and East from itstwo blocks in Madhya Pradesh.
