Charismatic leaders are leaders which different from other leaders in the following way that they transform associations and their individuals. They are able to articulate a vision for an organization’s future that motivates its members to extraordinary effort and achievement (House ; Howell, 1992). They can produce enthusiasm among the individuals of the organization by describing a better organizational future, by introducing new opportunities and solutions, and by connecting the needs of the members of the organization to the projected vision (Boal ; Bryson, 1988).
The charisma may be defined as a “certain quality of an individual identity, by virtue of which he is separate from normal men and treated as invested with supernatural, superhuman, extraordinary or at least specifically exceptional powers or qualities.” He proceed with, “Men do not follow by virtue of tradition or statute, but because they believe in him.” (Weber, 1947, 358)
History of charismatic leaders
As we already know that, the 19th and the 20th century were the century of charismatic leaders. In middle ages, leadership was mostly based on tradition and customs. Most people never met their leaders and leadership was legitimized by the divine right of kings, which is the reason it was both impossible and pointless to legitimize leadership by charisma.
