Chapter 3Research Methods This chapter presents the research methodology of the study. It includes discussion on the research design and research methods covering the research subject, data gathering techniques, data analysis and ethical considerations in research.Research DesignThis study uses a descriptive design for analysis which is qualitative in nature. It focuses on the analyzing the images of Ozamiz City as to the living condition of the people in the city.

Describing the symbols, imageries, figurative languages and poetic vision present and expresses in the poems of Restituto Acapulco were identifies, implies and analyzes according to how the poet conveys his thoughts and to how the researcher relates the poet’s views and ideas to his own experiences, awareness and knowledge about the society of Ozamiz City.Research Subjects The research subjects of this study are the five selective poems of Restituto Acapulco, which are “Come To My Neighborhood, That is”, “A Show”, “The Deck Of Cards”, “The Rains Down In Ozamiz City” and “Along The Sidewalks Are The Wares”. The researcher is confident that the poems of Restituto Acapulco aided in fulfilling the study, revealing the images of Ozamiz, specifically the living condition of the people in the city since Restituto was really an Ozamiznon. Restituto together with his wife was awarded as the “Barangay Couple Model” in their place. He had also received the Certificate of Recognition for the meritorious service in Immaculate Conception Cathedral Parish. The city awarded him also as the “Writer and First Chairman of the Council of Advisers of the City Mayor”. Restituto was able to make 500 poems in his book “Verses: From A Bamboo Balcony”.

This book had been written since 1980’s. The reader will find three subtitles which are “Notes in the Setting Sun” which was compiled up to 1996, “Windows to Divinity” which was compiled up to 1983 and “Verses from a Bamboo Balcony” which was compiled up to 2004. In the foreword of this book, Panfilo J. Rosauro stated, “All these make it a first timer in Ozamis City. He added that the emergence of this book written by an Ozamiznon comes as a surprise to the daily pace of the socio-cultural life of Ozamis City”. This simply tells that the book of Restituto Acapulco “Verses: From A Bamboo Balcony” is really the first ever literary book with literary pieces published in Ozamis City.

Data Gathering TechniqueThe researcher looks for a poems or books of local poetry that represents the city of Ozamiz. Restituto Acapulco’s “Verses: From A Bamboo Balcony” is the only book that the researcher finds. Through the courage and curiosity about the place of Ozamiz City, the researcher arrives to investigate the images of Ozamiz City in terms of their living condition of the Ozamiznon in the city through the selected poems of Restituto Acapulco.Among the poems of Restituto Acapulco, the researcher chooses only five selected poems as the basis of the study and for interpretation. The five selected poems come from the book of Rstituto Acapulco, which is titled “Verses: From the Bamboo Balcony”.The researcher selects the five selected poems of Restituto Acapulco in which can help in this study and can answer the problems in which the researcher is looking for: symbols, imageries, figurative languages and poetic visions. Restituto writes his literary pieces alone in his room with his own typewriter. He compiled his entire poem in books which he titled “Verses: From a Bamboo Balcony” and the “Cavinte Heights”.

However, he had only published “Verses: From a Bamboo Balcony” because he lost his life in December 21, 2005, the time he was printing the pages of his second book “Cavinte Height”. Being a native of Ozamiz City, Restituto Acapulco proves that he was able to observe the social condition of the place specifically the living condition and the peace and order of the city in the early days up to the day before his death in 2005. Data AnalysisTo have a better understanding and analysis of the poems, the researcher decides to gather facts and information about the life of Restituto Acapulco through interviews with his family in his residence in Tinago, Ozamiz City.The researcher is confident that the poems of Restituto Acapulco will help in fulfilling the study, revealing the images of Ozamiz, specifically the living condition of the people in the city since Restituto is really an Ozamiznon.The researcher analyzes the symbols, imageries, figurative languages and poetic vision in order to come up with the revelation of the images of Ozamiz City specifically the living condition of Ozamiznons in the city. He uses descriptive theory, theory of lexical concept and cognitive method, reader-response approach and historical/biographical theory in analyzing the poems of Restituto Acapulco which are “Come To My Neighborhood, That Is”, “A Show”, “The Deck Of Cards”, “The Rains Down In Ozamiz City” and “Along The Sidewalks Are The Wares”.

Ethical Consideration in Research Research ethics is very important. The researcher is considering and gives respect to the late Ozamiznon Restituto Acapulco whose works through his poems are the subjects on this study. The researcher is need to maintain respect to the community of Ozamiz City while doing this interpretation of the five selected poems of Restituto Acapulco that helps in revealing the images of Ozamiz City in terms of their living condition of the Ozamiznon. Hence, the ethical aspect of research will be followed very strictly in this research.
