Assignment 2: project briefing Zero waste management in Samdrup Jongkhar IntroductionThe Kingdom of Bhutan is a landlocked country, bordered by China in the north and with India to the south, east and west. It lies between latitudes 26.7°N and 28.
4°N and longitudes 88.7°E and 92.2°E. Bhutan’s landscape ranges from 100 meter above sea level in the sub-tropical plains in the south to 7,500 meter above sea level in the northern sub-alpine region. By virtue of its geographical location, Bhutan is blessed by nature with altitudinal varying land mass with good vegetation cover, perennial rivers and fair climatic conditions. Although Bhutan’s natural heritage is still largely intact, the government has given highest priority in conserving and protecting its environment. Out of country’s total area of 38,394 km2, about 80% of the land is under forest cover.
Project outline Samdrup Jongkhar is one of the districts in Bhutan which is located at the south-eastern part of Bhutan. It is a border town with Indian state of Assam. Samdrup Jongkhar District, which covers both the Samdrup Jongkhar and Dewathang towns amongst others, is located at 26°55?N latitude and 91°37?E longitude. The total area covered by this district is 2207 sq.km, and population of 35,079 as on 2017 (NSB, 2017). The district has lots of constructions , mining activities and industries.
So the waste management project is proposed due to the situation and the main aim of this project is to reduce environment pollution and creating more employment opportunities in the economy. Objective of Zero Waste Management The main objective of the waste management is to reduce the environment pollution. The zero waste management project also attempts to recover maximum waste through reducing, recycling, and reusing. The project aims to reduce the unwanted waste by dumping it into proper segregated bins and proper allocated landfills to minimize the environmental impact which is caused by solid waste.
The long-term objective of the proposed project of zero waste management is to create awareness in the society and to provide employment opportunities especially to the younger generations. The another main intention of planned project is to increase living standard of people as well as community by keeping it clean and healthy.Project activities The planned project will carry out the following activities:• Training of employee: The project will regularly recruit the both skilled and non-skilled workers by providing the training about the waste management.
• Zero waste festival: It is one of the main activities because the project will focus on giving talks on waste management and show-caste the product made from the waste management during the occasions. The project will also encourage the schools within the community to learn about the waste segregations and impacts of solid waste on the environment.• Recycle art and craft activities: The project will encourage and train community members especially the school going children about the different types of recycling methods to reduce waste.• Developing awareness: The project will incorporated with education of waste management and cleaning campaigns too.Project benefit Environment benefit: The planned project will directly benefit the environment because reducing, reusing and recycling is an important factor to minimize the green house gas emission. Additionally, the project will not burn down the garbage and instead will reuse the materials instead.
Economic benefit: The zero waste management will helps the economy by creating more of green jobs as resources are being recirculated in the economy rather than using them once and then destroyed or burn down.Social benefit: The proposed project will helps in building the community and promotes social equality as the project will make possible that everyone has access to tools to waste management methods in their particular place which will make everyone to contribute in conserving the natural environment.Cost detailsThe project cost has been estimated on the basis of estimated designs and pictures organized at the level of detailed project report. Rate analyses for major item of works have been worked out based on prevailing market rates and referring to other similar sized zero waste management projects.Activities Budget allocationFormation of committee member Nu. 50,000Training of the employees Nu. 5,00,000Conduct of zero waste festival Nu. 10,00,000Conduct workshops at schools and other institutions Nu.

Input to the Asian Judges Network on Environment. “Asian Development Bank, https://www.adb.org/sites/default/files/publication/150136/review-compendiu environmental policies-and-laws-bhutan.pdfThe article mainly addresses about how the development activities will impact the environment. Authors has also stated that country should implement the developmental plans by maintaining the rich culture and biodiversity of Bhutan. The article has helped me in my project by how the urbanization and the rapid growth of industries have destroy our environment and how people have to preserve their precious environment from those challenges.
Bhutan aims to maintain 60% of its forest cover and the government has specific rules and responsibility to keep its environment healthy. This will benefit my project to take all the procedures to make an zero waste management a consistent without any consequences to protect our natural environment.Jazynka and Kitson. 2017. The evidence given by author reflects about how this recycling process has been helpful to the school.
The article has also given several examples on how the kids of the chosen school can donate to the recycling efforts. The article discusses on how the particular school has started the recycling activities in other places in order to promote environment sustainability and to educate them to know about the problem of waste. This resource is immensely valuable for my project as the writer talks about encouraging the youth to learn about the waste management. Rachel, S.

htmlThe article highlights about the declining of numerous recycling centre and it also talks about how the dearth of recycling centre is hampering recycling rates. The worst part is that waste are being dumped into the landfills which is not good for the environment. The writer also mention about the plan to help those centres such as government funds to give the promote for recycling method. This source is valuable to me because it gives me a better ideas of recycling. GNH Centre. N.
d. What is Gross National Happiness? http://www.gnhcentrebhutan.org/what-is-gnh/Gross National Happiness was introduced by the fourth king of Bhutan in 1972, and later enacted in the year 2008 as the goal of government of Bhutan.
There are four pillars of gross national happiness and environmental conservation is one among those. Environmental conservation is one of the main contribution towards GNH. Therefore, GNH Centre is helpful for monitoring my project of waste management with GNH guiding principle.Phuntsho, S and Yangden, D 2010 “Studying municipal waste generation and composition in the urban areas of Bhutan” Vol.

org/10.1177/0734242X09343118This article highlight the problems of waste segregation in Bhutan. The evidence shows that Bhutan lacks the solid waste data which is significant for the development of the waste management in the country. The article also address that the government of Bhutan is starting waste disposal through rules and regulation and by giving financial support to the people.
The problem of waste management can be solved by implementing the three Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle) and emphasis more on other recycling methods. Therefore, this source is useful for my project as its objectives includes environment conservation by reducing the waste.NSB, 2017.
