Application is any program or set of programs designed for the end user. Application software also known as end-user programs. Applications are located on the system software because they cannot operate without operating system and system utilities. System software consists of low-level programs that interact with computers at a very basic level. This includes the operating system, compilers, and utilities for managing computer resources. The function of application software is designed to perform a coordinated set of functions, tasks, or activities in the user’s interest. Examples of applications include word processors, spreadsheets, accounting applications, web browsers, media players, aviation flight simulators, console games, or photo editors. Collective noun application collectively referred to all applications. First, this contrasts with system software that primarily involves running a computer. Applications may be bundled with the computer and its system software or published separately, and may be encoded as proprietary, open source, or university projects. Second, Applications built for mobile platforms are called mobile applications. A common application, sometimes referred to as “off the shelf,” is the kind of software you use at home and at school. Examples include word processors, spreadsheets, databases, desktop publishing packages, graphical packages, and more. This type of software is trying to be a “jackpot.” It provides many of the features most users want. Formatting text, creating charts, organizing tables. But it does attempt to be “everything for all,” so there will be plenty of features that may never be used, for example, statistics, mail merges. This makes the storage size of these applications quite large. There are several good reasons for using general purpose software such as it is relatively cheap, easily available from most computer shops, it will have been thoroughly tested so there won’t be any serious problems or bugs and there will be lots of user support books, user guides, online help and discussion forums on the Internet.
