Albert more courage to live than to kill

Albert Camus said,”but in the end, one needs more courage to live than to kill himself.

” In the novel A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, the main character Salva experiences conflict. Through the examples of Salva deciding whether to run into the bush to find his family, Salva urging himself to escape the crocodiles and Salva having to walk across the desert, the reader will see that self vs self is the most apparent conflict in my novel. Although many conflicts occur in my novel one that sticks out modelling self vs self is when Salva is walking across the desert. The hardest part of Salva’s Journey is when he has to cross the Akobo desert, a journey that would take him three days. Linda Sue Park writes, “The sun was relentless and eternal: There was neither wisp of cloud nor whiff of breeze for relief. Each minute of walking in that arid heat felt like an hour. Even breathing became an effort: “Every breath Salva took seemed to drain his strength rather than restore it” (p 52).

This quote means that Salva has to fight himself to get through the desert because he realizes that “he is on his own” and has to face the soldiers and other obstacles on his own. Salva is also falling behind the group and his shoes are full of thorns, the soles which were made from rubber tire treads, had been reduced to shreds held together with a little leather and a great deal of hope. Through this conflict, we see that this is one example of how self vs self is the most evident conflict in my novel. Salva has finally completed his journey to Ethiopia. Six years later he has chased away from his refugee camp facing the Nile River. Linda Sue Park writes, “Salva realizes that being forced under the current had probably saved his life.

But there was no time to marvel over this: the rain, the mad current, the bullets, the crocodiles, the welter of arms and legs, the screams, the blood. He had to get across somehow.” (page 79) This is important to my argument because Salva has to urge himself to escape the crocodiles because he thinks he cannot make it. Salva knows he has to live long enough to find his family. Through this conflict, we see that this is another example of how self vs self is the most evident conflict in my novel.Salva’s village is under attack and he must face the decision of running away or finding his family.

The author writes “He felt his heart beating so hard that its pulse pounded in his throat and ears. He wanted to shout, “I need to go home, I must go home. But his words were blocked by the wild thumping in his throat.

” (page 7) This is important to my argument because when the soldiers attacked Salva’s village, and when the teacher says that Salva has to run into the bush, Salva is torn on what to do and his time is running out. Salva also has a repetitive thought about his family, he eventually runs into the bush knowing that he will never see his family again. Through this conflict, we see that this is my final example of how self vs self is the most evident conflict in my novel. Salva may have had some hard times, but he had the strength to surpass those challenges, Salva walking across the desert, Salva swimming across the Nile dessert, and Salva running into the bush shows the reader that self vs self is the most apparent form of conflict in my novel.

There have been several books about the lost boys of Sudan but this story by Linda Sue Park had a quiet conclusion that is filled with hope. This book was really inspiring and a great read.
