The reserve of Kingfisher
Lake, Ontario is an example of one community in Canada who experiences the
negative effects of inadequate education funding. According to Hannah James’ documentary Failing Canada’s First Nations Children (2016), the local school in
Kingfisher Lake expressed having rotting walls and flooring, no running
water or heat, and poor air quality due to the consistent smell of sewage.
During the winter months, children and youth are required to wear their
snowsuits in class in order to stay warm, and the school frequently closes due
to cold weather.
