12   Organization of the Study The thesis has been divided into SEVEN chapters. ChapterI introduces the topic of research. It is an introductory part which highlights the research problems, provides operational definitions of the importantconcepts.

It enumerates the objectives, lists the hypotheses of the study, methodology,scope, limitations and describes methods and techniques used for datacollection and analysis. It briefly discusses the aims and objectives of highereducation; it also discusses the role of libraries in higher education ingeneral and college education in particular. It briefly reviews the presentstatus of college libraries in India and particularly in Uttarakhand andjustifies the need for the present investigation. Lastly, it gives brief summaryof remaining six chapters i.e.

organization of the present study.Chapter II contains a brief reviewof selected literature published in the various journals, books, thesis,e-databases etc. done on the college libraries conducted in India and abroadunder the major headings of the selected topic of research.

Chapter III describes the overview of the studiesdone on degree college education in India in general and in Uttarakhand state particularand also provides a state-of-the art position of the degree college libraries. Itprovides a brief introduction about Uttarakhand state including geography,population, literacy rate etc. It outlines the beginning of higher education inUttarakhand state, and present status of government degree colleges and theiradministrative set-up. It describes objectives and functions of collegelibraries and their place in colleges/institutions of higher learning. It givesan overview of the organizational structure of college libraries in Uttarakhandstate including administrative set-up of college libraries, organization ofvarious sections, library finance, personnel, library collection, technicalprocessing, services, facilities, quantitative analysis of library users – suchas teachers, students etc. in college libraries.Chapter IV provides a descriptive analysis of thecollected data on the various aspects of the government post graduate collegelibrary such as library manpower, library collection, library building, physicalfacilities maintenance and care activities, use of Information Communication Technology,library resources, library budget, sources of budget, selection and acquisitionof documents, problems encountering in procurement of books, technicalprocessing and maintenance of library resources, physical stock verification,problem of loss of books, weeding out, library services and facilities etc.
